Our Homes, Our Future: Support Housing Justice in Valdosta, GA

Black to the Future Action Fund is teaming up with Valdosta community leaders and elected officials to demand housing justice now and calling for concrete policy changes that expand access to affordable housing.

• Eliminate Junk Fees: End junk application fees and discriminatory work requirements
• Increase Housing Supply: Add more affordable units where people shop, work and go to school
• Keep Rent Reasonable: Slow rent increases for people who are working hard to make ends meet

Valdosta (and Georgia) has an Affordable Housing Crisis

Rising rents are a problem across Georgia, and Valdosta is no exception. Private equity and large developers are creating a race to the bottom, building cheap while squeezing families for rent. The National Low Income Housing Coalition estimates that the average low-income household in Georgia needs to earn DOUBLE their current income to afford fair market rent.

In Valdosta, the median household income for Black people is roughly $34,000, which is barely half the median of white household income. Because of this pay gap, affordable housing is even further out of reach for Black Valdostans. A Valdosta Housing Authority survey showed that 60% of working families in Valdosta are struggling to afford rent and basic needs. With nearly one in three families living below the poverty line, people can’t sit on waitlists that are 10x the current supply of housing, nor should they have to pay outrageous junk fees just to get in the door.
